Some employees, often at the request of the manager for easier accounting, round their clock-in and clock-out times to the nearest quarter-hour. While this is generally an accepted practice, it can be dangerous when employees take advantage of whether they are rounding down or up.

This type of time theft can be intentional or completely subconscious. Employees might need to take a personal phone call at work to arrange a doctor’s appointment or they might find themselves scrolling through social media or reading the news. While occasional misuse of time can actually provide a healthy “mental break” for employees, doing this excessively can be considered time theft. This is especially pertinent when an employee has a side job that they operate while on your clock.
